I've had some of my leeks in for about 3 weeks now and they look ok. Not seen any slugs have a go at them but Rust spots can be a problem.

I think most suggest planting leeks when they are pencil thickness.

I dont think they are bothered too much by pests.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Never had slug trouble but mine will be a few months, years, decades before they go out, they have only just appeared lol small leeks are tastier  :D disorganised grower, bad compost, forgot to do them all have a major part to play.

I take it you've not come across that wonderful little pest called the Leek Moth then!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

As far as I know it's nor been updated from no chemical prevention available to us amateurs, just netting as a prevention.

I asked at RHS Wisley recently and was told enviromesh is the only way to stop leek moth but I would be interested in any other ideas...
