Some of you will have heard about my husband wanting to grow 28 courgette plants, but it left me wondering what big booboo's have you made while growing your own.  :D

Don't be shy we can all be stupid sometimes.

Throwing all the couch grass roots onto the compost heap. I'll be needing to sieve all that when I break it open next year

Oh well, we live and learn :D

Oh yes that's one we did avoid, we ditch all our roots. Just the courgette lesson to learn  ::)

Making my raised beds so wide that I can't quite reach the centre of them from the path.

You didn't read john's book first then. Are they wide enough to split down the middle with a scaffold board.

I've inherited one of those too! Destroyed some of my beans last year when I fell in... :nowink:

2011 I swapped to a plot full of mare's tail to be next to my other plot.

They're 6' x 12'. I was planning on splitting them into two 6x5 beds as it needs less board and leaves more space for plants. I want to do it in a temporary way though, as 12x6 is fine for things like spuds. I've got a couple of half scaffold boards that can be put on top as a platform to work from so I can harvest from one end to the other. It's a real pain trying to weed onions planted at 6 inch centres though.

Sowing a load of seeds, in a bed and not putting them in a marked row.....

2 Weeks later, I have a million seedlings.......and which ones are mine....

Anyones guess.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

I used washable ink on my seedling labels (lolly sticks). The labels soaked up any water like a wick and the ink ran. There are now at least 6 large pots of mystery seedlings that I have not the faintest clue about.   ::)

I thought hubby made ours too small at 8 by 3 foot and one 8 by 4 but actually it's worked out really well as the kids can help us. It was dictated more by wood size and not having to waste any. I love them and spuds grow fine in them.

I managed to grow a huge sprawling tomatoe plant in a closed porch one year with loads of flowers. It looked like it was going to be great but non of them polinated and I got nothing from it!

cleverly planting a row of onions between 2 rows of potatoes, so now they are both up (potatoes and onions), I realise I cant now hoe between the potatoes..

I sowed 8 tomato seeds.

4 for outside, that are tall....

4 are bush variety for the garden at home, in a hanging basket.......

Now, I marked them in the tray, but forgot to mark them, when I planted them up in to the 3 inch pots......

Now, i'm going to have a 6 foot plant in a hanging basket......

SUCH FUN!! :(

One of my mistakes is giving my lovely daughter some plants to grow on, like runner beans and tomatoes, knowing she'll kill them in a couple of weeks!

The other thing this year was writing (like you Surbie!) on some of my labels with water soluble ink,  so I have some tomatoes that could be Roma, or they could be cordon!  Luckily my garten perle were still legible and they are in their hanging baskets!  ;) ;)
