onions .... leaning towards the west
« on: May 13, 2013, 13:30 »
Hi, my onions are planted on the east side of my south facing garden.  They are leaning towards the morning sunshine ... they dont seem to be contented with afternoon sun.  will they be ok or are they likely to bolt? is there anything I can do???

Hi Ally - are they in a shaded spot? This would make them tend to seek out the best light source.

Onions we plant always lean to one side -- the west

The plot is not shaded, and it is against the prevailing wind

I guess it may have something to do with strength of the light........

Mine appear to be pushing themselves out of the ground completely!  Most are now laid on top of the soil, and some even have a few mm of root showing, but appear to be healthy enough.  Should I cover them up with soil or re-bury them, or just leave them be?
No matter how many plants I have in my garden, I can always find room for one more.

Could be birds pulling them out, I would just bed them back in. However I operate a try it and see base for my gardening so it maybe worth waiting for someone wiser.

Yes I planted my onions on the east side next to a fence ... so it only get proper light in the afternoon.  Will this have an effect on the size they will grow too?  all the way up the garden I have about 3 foot that on each bed that doesnt get sunshine til about 1pm; my cauliflowers and lettuce are straight and healthy; the first row of pots are slow at showing (other rows have been earthed up twice, first row only just broken through).
