After digging in compost, I plant on the flat & draw the soil up into a 3" high wall around the plant. This stops the water running away from the plant.

So you do the same thing as I have just said but not in a pocket, and in a dish instead of a mound.
Do you use any compost or your own mix. :?:

Horse muck :!:
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I grew a variety from T & M last year called 'Kojac'. It did not have those nasty spines on the leaf stems. It's not listed this year for some reason. I've got 2 seed left, so I'll have to see If I can let one mature, (usually not a problem!) and see if they will breed true to type.

It's not an F1 hybrid, but cross pollenation could be the problem.

Any tips for preventing mildew on the leaves Henry  :?:
Try a preventative spray of 10% milk + 90% water.  Do not spray in direct sunshine - I'd suggest once per week of an evening.

I'll have a go at that one next season WG.  Any Idea how it works  :?:

I forgot to add I have learned a great deal by reading these forums and hope that I always will. The information given freely would take months just to look it up.

Can I just say as a relative rookie here, this thread is a fantastic example of how to share knowledge and experience, with friendship and humour, in a way you would never get from books. Brilliant

An aspirin spray is also supposed to do the job, Aunty. 1 x 300mg tablet to the gallon. I'm not speaking from experience here mind, it's just what I've gleaned from articles on the net, but I'll be giving it a go next year.

Some guy was saying the milk spray worked but I haven't tried it as first time in history this year my corquettes were free from it, must have been well watered enough in the flood.

DD Edwin Tucker and I think Dt Brown or Fothergills also sell Kojac.

I can only two finger type everything so that is what takes me time plus I have to sign on everytime I post because I have a problem with AOL because I am at the end of a line.

That's where you've been then! It is not just you and AOL, I get that often these days, you want to open posting in word, no, connection unsuccessful and then finally successful, then log in and start typing again. Keeps me of talking too much.

So can they be grown upwards to save space?

Long Green Trailing is one for that but most varieties sold nowadays will be bush types to save space, so they can't be grown upwards.

Round de Nice is also trailing, but fruit can get enormous very fast!

I posted this suggestion back in March but we never heard back from the person posting the question : http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?p=39796#39796  I didn't bother trying it this year since courgettes were barely growing in a very cool sunless summer.

I've no idea how it works but try this link : http://www.thefrugallife.com/mildew.html

It's quite well known that milk & water spray helps against mildew on any plant. I'm sure I heard about spraying with bicarbonate of soda as well but I've not tried that.

Milk sprays are not so hot in the greenhouse, gets a bit smelly!
