HHHint No 30 Getting compost ready for Courgettes
« on: December 17, 2007, 20:39 »
Courgettes do better on old compost,I like to mix old compost with used growbags.
They donot like new compost because very often there is too much Nitrogen and this just promotes leaf growth.
So start to pile up and mix your older compost ready to make a "pocket" slightly raised for spring planting of this delicious veg.

For those who donot know what I mean by "Pocket" Courgettes very often grow best if you dig a hole and refill it that it is slighly raised with compost. Then plant on to it. I like to bury an upturned flower pot by the side so into which I put a handful of pebbles to stop it moving with the neck about 2" above ground. Then I water the plant via the pot. This helps to get the water down to the roots.
Some poor village is missing its Idiot
plus officially the longest ever occupier of the naughty step.

No not always Gobs.If you want a really good bumper and tasty crop then they need a little comfort.

However if you have really good soil in good hart then they can do well in that.In bad years those who have prepared do do a lot better then those who didnot.

Yes, with a trailing variety. Bush ones won't be that good for the purpose not taking the piss here, lot of catalogues won't state the growth habit to varieties.
