« on: May 08, 2013, 18:52 »
My basil seedlings are popping through now i had to sow them in modules so there are around 5 seedlings popping up in each..now do i need to thin them when they are slightly bigger or do i transplant the whole module into a bigger pot??

Transplant them in a clump and they should do well  :)

Mine are doing pretty well now - I pinched out the tips at the weekend.  :)

I sow small pots of basil. As each sprouts, the next is sown.
Successive sowings - that's the phrase I'm looking for! Very tired, fingers can't type anymore and I seem to get a bit dyslexic towards the end of night shift! :D

Basil needs more warmth than most other herbs - I've never managed to get it to grow well outdoors even in good summers here.

My January indoor sowing has only started growing really well in the past few weeks, no doubt due to better light levels and higher temperatures (the pot has been on the kitchen windowsill from the beginning.)

I've made one of my home-made greenhouse planters wider than the others to make room for growing some basil next to the tomatoes - if the plan works I won't have far to go to make a tasty tomato salad!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I do mine in 5" pots on the kitchen window and never thin them. I space the seeds out across the top of the pot and as they grow they hold each other up. They stay in the pot for their entire life and don't get potted on.  I leave room at the top of the pot so I can top them up with fresh compost if needs be.  I've got a window ledge full of different ones at the moment.  Pesto is on the menu this week and next, and the week after  :D

Me too (a first for home-made - I'm going to freeze some of it in a clingfilm-lined ice-cube tray as per a recipe I've found to avoid getting pestoed off with it too soon!)  :)

Good plan. Also fresh made pesto doesn't last. I don't know what they put in the jar stuff to make it keep

I don't pot on either generally - the herb doesn't last long enough in this house!

Lovely grub  :tongue2:

I love basil on tomatoes. I made ham, basil and tomato sarnis just now and forgot to put the ham on. Who needs it  :D

I did that with what I made late last year JayG!  But keep forgetting they are in the freezer! lol

CQ, I wouldn't like to think what they put in the jars to stop stuff going off!   :(

I left my 10 inch pot of basil in the little greenhouse over winter, it is all growing again now!  I had to give it a haircut the other day!
