How long do seeds take to germination and show any signs of life when sown directly into the ground?

Particularly interested in peas, beans and corn as they are the ones I have so far sown into the ground directly.

I know I'm being impatient, but I also want to know when I should be expecting to see one thing or to try new seeds before its too late.

it can depend on warmth and moisture, how deep they were planted, and even to some extent, on the variety planted

So, very difficult to say :(

Just don't lose faith, and water regularly.

They will pop up!
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

I don't want to worry you, but you might want to dig about and make sure those pea and bean seeds are actually still there.

We have an enormous vole population who help themselves to these tasty underground snacks, given half a chance, so I have to sow mine in modules and plant them out as small plants (not one pea per module though  )

and sweetcorn does like the soil quite warm to germinate outside this early......

Radishes are always the crop to sow for you to see signs of life nice and quickly  :nowink:  Always feel spring has arrived once they pop up  :)

Already had a look, just to check the seeds were ok and found several of my peas within a few handfuls of soil. So I'm fairly confident that the other are ok too.

It depends how warm its been for you, my peas planted at end of Feb (impatient, I know!) came up a month later - after I'd given up hope - whereas those planted at Mid April popped up in half the time!

This link is really useful as it shows the effect of temperature on germination times.

http://tomclothier.hort.net/page11.html

I can't take original credit for finding it, I got it from others on this site. Stick a thermometer in the ground a couple of inches deep and then look up the result on the chart for your crop of choice.
