When my peas begin to shoot what should i let them grow against.. they are in a raised bed to one side so do i need to put some netting up??

Mine are growing up a five foot chicken wire panel hubby made. I covered while they got going but took net off yesterday as they were starting to cling to wire and net. Hoping those naughty birds leave them alone  :wacko:
