gooseberry sawfly -leaves disappearing??
« on: May 04, 2013, 20:19 »
A warning to all, I've just spent half an hour squashing sawfly larvae on my gooseberries. Didn't get any last year but they have re-appeared. >:(

That seems awfully early for sawfly, mine has only just grown some leaves.  I'll have to have a good look!

I planted an invicta gooseberry bush last year in my garden, it lost it leaves during winter and
they appeared and bush was looking nice and healthy. I have just taken a look at it, all my leaves have disappeared but there are still lots of buds ready to bear fruit
Read somewhere about sawfly. What can I do? Will it still produce fruit this year?

What confuses me is that I have a red gooseberry bush next to it and it's still got all its leaves and bud. Guess it might lose its leaves too???

As you have guessed, it sounds like the work of the gooseberry sawfly to me.  http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/profile.aspx?pid=517

The plant will get weakened by it.  Take a look at the plant and investigate to see if there are any grubs remaining on the plant, remove them and squish.  Hoe the ground anyway as, even if they have left the plant, they may be in there.  It is worth regularly hoeing around gooseberries to prevent them overwintering there too.

I would give the plant a feed and hope for the best, but your fruit is probably going to be affected.

By the way, I find my red gooseberry doesn't get affected either - I guess it doesn't taste as nice to the sawfly!  Same for me with slugs and red lettuces!

We had a hideous job with the raspberry sawfly, ours just left the skeleton veins and no matter how much squashing and spraying we did nothing worked. We ended up removing the raspberries and burning them, now we don't grow raspberries in the back garden, shame really as they were lovely yellow ones.

If you can borrow a few hens.....
My solomons seal and gooseberry in my garden were dreadful with sawfly a few years back, but since i've let the hens scratch there's no problem, they love the larvae! And they'll eat any you can pick off.

One thing that surprised me was that I read that they overwinter in the soil below the plants. But we didn't have any sawfly at all last year so I wasn't expecting them this year :(
