First earlies- been earthed up twice and are up again several inches. (planted 6th April)
Second earlies- as above but not quite as big.                                     (planted 7th April)
Main crop- Just poking through in a few places.                                    (planted a week or two later..ish)

All are in raised beds and theres nothing left to earth them up now so they,ll be left to fend for themselves
from now unless a frost is imminent in which case i think i,ll have to use straw to protect them.

Varieties are- Rocket
                      Kestrel
                      Cara.
After a 3 year wait i finally have my allotment. HELP! (2/10/11)

Hi All,
A the topic says, is anyone's spuds showing yet. Mine have been in the ground 4 weeks and are not showing at all. I cant remember from past years how long they take to pop up.

Thanks FB

My earlies started poking their heads through today. Planted them about 5 weeks ago

I'm impressed how fast yours have grown. My potatoes were planted about the same time as yours and the earlies are just coming through the surface now, the second earlies have not appeared yet.

Just noticed the charlotte tubs need earthing up. The mains and earlies on the plot are coming through, as are the mains in the garden, but neither enough to earth up yet.

First tentative shoot just broken through today (Lady Christl, planted 14th April.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Planted second earlies on 7th April, 6 inches deep and they are all just beginning to show above the surface. This is my first year planting anything, could someone please confirm when I should start to "earth up"? Thanks

I'm impressed how fast yours have grown. My potatoes were planted about the same time as yours and the earlies are just coming through the surface now, the second earlies have not appeared yet.

Not sure if this helped them but this is what i did.

As i have raised beds due to my plot flooding i have been trying to fill them up, so....
in the autumn i filled them with slightly rotted/ fresh'ish manure mixed with plenty of straw and topped up as
it bedded down, 2 or 3 months later i topped it with a couple of inches of soil but didn't dig it in, that's how
it stayed until spring when i planted my spuds about 6 inch down.
So there was 6-8 inches of manure/straw with 2 inches of soil on top and spuds 6 inch down.

Do you think the extra warmth from the still rotting manure kicked them into life early?
They were all bought at the same time and chitted for at least 6 weeks so were off to a good start.

Whatever it is they seem to be loving it, i guess they like manure and straw.

Ps. i've been earthing them up with rotted manure with a bit of straw in it.
