Mine were looking huge and healthy in my tunnel - until my evil lurcher sneaked in there and had a wonderful time rolling and digging in them. I could really go off that dog.

Mine are finally through :)
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

First earlies through - pentland javelin and aran pilot - do these need earthing up? I have protected them from rabbits. Oh the responsibility of it all!
My husband's a water sign, I'm an earth sign, together we make mud :-)

My gardening diary is here - go on, have a peek , you might be able to help me!

I'd leave them for a week or so, unless you need to cover them up to protect from a forecast frost.

Remember that the leaves are the plant's food factory and depriving them of light continuously with stop this production. The main aim is to get them well earthed up for later in the season as the spuds develop and it's just the lower part of the haulms that need covering.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thank you DD - I wish my plot was in Loughborough and then I could just copy you! Onwards and upwards!

Very new to this but put some charlottes and king Edwards in about 4 weeks ago and the K.e.s just coming through now! BUT can anyone help, made a bit of a school boy error as I had just got the plot and got it cleared very quickly, desperate to put something in, planted the pots but with no compost or manure in the trench. Any advice as to how to feed them?

All mine are going great guns now. My maincrops have overtaken my second earlies which were planted 2 weeks earlier.

Just bung fertiliser into the trench when you earth up.  Chicken poo pellets or potato fertiliser.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
