I'm planning to sow mine in deep pots at the weekend, and plant them out surrounded by debris netting against a late frost in three weeks' time before we go on holiday

Can't leave them in pots too long as they get all tangled up and then I end up breaking stems when I try to sort them out.  ???

Yesterday, put seeds in the ground and put the backups in paper pots in the green house.  also seen my first honey bee and my first bumble bee of the year which prompted me to plant ;)

I always start in modules first.

a) the germination is better than direct in the ground.
b) the more mature plants are less susceptible to nasties such as slugs.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I put mine out a couple of weeks ago, I'm afraid I just slung them in the ground - I thought they were hardy like peas. Anyway now I've checked the packet, they are Blue Lake French Beans and not runners at all!

I agree, that’s why I put some backups in the paper pots, if the the sown one's get chomped then to paper modules can fill in. A belt and braces job  ;)

I was a bit eager and sowed them in toilet rolls tubes 3 weeks ago and they're about 30cm high now! They look like they need to be planted out but it's way too early  :(

Polestar, in pots. As others, waiting for the worst danger of frost to be past and for the plants to be big and strong enough to withstand slug attack before they go out on the frame.

I have seen beginners take runner beans up to the lottie in 3.5" pots and 2-3' tall, all tangled up, in cold weather. I have watched and waited for the frost to destroy them, but to my amazement and delight they have produced a really early crop. It's amazing what beginners seem to get away with. Mine suffer with the cold wind every year.

We reckon that the May 1st is the day to sow broad beans for our allotment site. Always done in pots to get them going with protection - tis Woody Pigeon, Ratty Rat, mice and sparrows rather than frost that is the cause for our way.

That would be me Azubah!   I planted out a dozen runner bean plants yesterday that had got too big for the conservatory.  I figured they could take their chances, and I'd shove in a few seeds in the gaps in case they all drop dead.   I started loads of things too early this year (my first).  Just too keen to get started.   No serious deaths yet, but I'm sure some disappointments on the way.

Just managed to get a second batch sowed after our disaster with lidl compost.  ::) my 22 month old had other ideas, today obviously isn't a seed day for her.  i also threw in some leeks, I know it's late but any leek is better than none.
