Whos started their runner beans
« on: May 01, 2013, 18:56 »
As the title asks who has started their runner beans and what type, im starting mine this weekend, they are called Batcombe bean i was told they are a cross breed, the chap who gave them to me reckons they have been growing in their family for at least 80-100 years, his dad crossed them.

When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

if sowing them now, would that be in pots in GH or direct in the ground? ive only just got the the other half of the plot this week which has bean poles in so ive manured the trenches. just unsure about direct sowing

I always plant in pots just to let them get to a reasonable size before introducing them to the local slugs! ;)

If the slugs chomp off two leaves when there are only two leaves bye-bye beans!

I sow mine the same time as the squash. Start of May, in a frost free greenhouse.

I sowed mine last week and four were up, what size should they be when you plant them out?

Put my White Lady in 10days ago, most are just breaking the surface . I make tall newspaper pots for mine and stand 8 in a plastic tub that fat balls for the birds come in, put the lid on to stop mice getting them and stand the tub on the greenhouse floor. Got 2 tubs with runners and 1 tub of french beens. Its easy to lift the tubs outside for harding off when the time comes.

I start mine in pots.  (last weekend) but they won't go outside until last frosts have passed.  End of May

White lady and the rest are a mixture of what I save each year.
