composting cooked food and leftovers
« on: April 30, 2013, 20:57 »
Hi, im trying to get my compost up to a decent standard (at the moment its full of straw that i had with a delivery of manure) i keep adding green waste to it but theres so much straw that doesnt look like its rotting down atall.
since becoming obsessed with my friends and families compostable leftovers it pains me to see all the cooked food getting thrown away unused.
I know that its a bad idea to add cooked food because it attracts animals but is there any harm in me allocating an area seperate to the compost (with perhaps a sealed compost bin) to add cooked food to?
I know there are composting systems for cooked food that you add a special ingredient to because i seen them on the forums before but they looked small and expensive.

any thoughts on this?

Hi it's called bokashi composting, you usually get the bokashi & 2 bins to rotate. The bins have a tap to drain the liquid which is then diluted as a liquid feed. Possibly this could be copied on a bigger scale with the bokashi bran & a water butt type system?  I don't think it's recommended to compost cooked food without it bring treated first.

There are a few videos on Youtube on diy bokashi worth looking at.
Read about my allotment exploits at Ecodolly at plots 37 & 39.  Questions, queries and comments are appreciated at Comment on Ecodolly's exploits on plots 37 & 39

The completely sealed tumbler types can be used for cooked food as can ones from the council: Johannas and cones.

I took on a green cone from the Council, and, despite following the installation instructions and it apparently being rodent proof - it got infested with rats.  We hadn't seen rats in the garden prior to this time.  I am still trying to get rid of them.  I met with the recycling guy at the council and he was impressed because I have a very successful wormery and compost heaps.  He took back my findings as I was one of the first residents to take on a green cone.  They stopped advertising them to residents shortly after, so I always wondered if my experience was repeated elsewhere.
