Low cost rotivator
« on: April 30, 2013, 20:36 »
Planning ahead for next year and I'm looking for a low cost petrol rotivator. Any idea of a cost or where to get one?
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

Share with a fellow plot-holder?  ;)
Get a spade?

(try freegle/freecycle or gumtree?).  Don't forget that rotivators can chop up weeds and make more weeds....
Good hunting!

dont go for a low cost rotivator, as they are generally cheap in construction and do not take the punishment, we have had 3 delivered and 3 broke, valve, shaft and piston. now the new one is still in box as it takes up to much room when built.
they migh do if you have a previously dug and grown bed, but virgin ground is a no no.
I would go to gumtree and get a decent second hand one. of a good trade name.

I got a Handy rotovator with a Briggs and stratton engine off fleabay for £100. Hardly used. Thoroughly recommend it . It won't break virgin ground but i doubt many amateur machines would. I rough dig in the autumn and add manure then break it all down to a fine tilth as needed in spring. I have a plough attachment that makes lovely furrows and earths up the spud's.

I have two the same, I bought both on ebay for about £10 each (non running) and after a bit of work got both running, but since have robbed parts from one to keep the other running, if you are mechanically handy this is worth trying as they are very simple machines with few parts to go wrong (carburettor and points/ignition are the biggest problems).
try and go for a good old make as mine dates from the 1970's and still runs fine (when I dont break the starter cord).
