Compost heaps should not affect the flavour of apples.

Are you sure its a Katy? Its not unknown for trees to be mis-labelled.

If you dont like the variety, why not try grafting over to some other varieties? You could even have several varieties on one tree. I'm grafting over my Cox's Orange Pippin to Pitmaston Pineapple, D'Arcy Spice, and Blenheim Orange. I have also grafted quite a few very others onto very dwarf rootstocks. I wont get much of any one variety but I will have a range of apples from mid July through to late spring.

Oh I was hoping that was the cause. Oh well I do prefer the extra space. I'll fairly sure it's a Katy it had apples on when we purchased it and all the descriptions fit perfectly

Apart from the taste of course  ;)

Where did you buy it from? Is it also very sharp? It could be a Foxwhelp by the sounds of it.

Local garden centre and yes it's very very sharp. Bright red apples, my daughter thought they looked like snow whites apples. Not a dark red but a bright bright red

Cant be completely sure of course, but it does sound like a Foxwhelp. A very good cider apple, but you'd not want to eat one!

Neither of those look 100% like ours, ours are much brighter red all over

Update

Our tree this year managed to get one apple to a beautiful size with a juicy flavourful taste, hubby really enjoyed it, however it dropped every other fruit and it had a bumper crop for the trees size.

Should i just give up with this tree or give it another year.
