Mail sent to the VP

Seems really weird that the DG Agri and DG Environment both oppose the proposed law but in the interests of consumer rights, we'll not be able to sell or swap unlicensed seeds.

Reminds me on a Monsanto tactic to be honest - infest some poor sod's land with their patented seeds, then sue him for breach of contract that he's never signed up to !

Fortunately, I fully intend to follow the French interpretation of this ruling, should it get passed, and completely ignore it.

Best of luck people, start saving your seeds now .... :-)

E-mail sent. These people just do not seem to realise that we need diversity in our seeds to ensure that if one variety gets diseased there are others that can be used to develop new disease resistant varieties.
almost exactly what I said in my email, no old seeds no diversity to change to a hardier variety if needs be. no flavour either as most seeds nowadays are for farmers high yields etc

National Listing is a legal requirement for new varieties of the main agricultural and vegetable species which seeks to ensure that no new variety can be marketed unless it is genuinely new and, for agricultural crops, an improvement on varieties already being sold.

This might be interesting if you can understand it:

http://ec.europa.eu/food/plant/plant_propagation_material/eu_marketing_requirements/vegetables_en.htm

If I understand any of that, then this only applies to farmers.  I can't find all the varieties I grow in the list of approved veg.  So, is any of this actually going to affect what we can grow?

My instincts tell me that this is a piece of EU legislation for legislation's sake, but when I get a bit more spare time to wade through some of this stuff I'll try to find the bit about why it is necessary, who it affects, and so on.

(If I can't find anything which makes any sense my keyboard and Outlook will be very busy!)  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Even if this was to affect only farmers, then market gardeners could be included in that category, and most of us know that market gardeners prefer to supply foods with taste rather than tasteless commercial quantity. All depends on one person's take on how market gardeners are viewed. If they get labelled with 'small farmer', they'd still be included and others who cannot garden will be at the mercy of tasteless fruit and veg.

Real Seeds obviously think so, or they wouldn't have this campaign

As did I in mine. Hopefully they will realise the importance of diversity.
