Climbing Beans in pots
« on: April 23, 2013, 09:39 »
Good Morning!  I planted some runner beans and climbing beans a couple of weeks ago.  Four of the climbing bean plants have shot up and I have potted them on into larger pots.  I used tin foil at the back of the seed trays so don't think they are particularly leggy.  I don't really know what to do with them next!  There are going to get too big to keep on the window sill.  Can I pinch them out? They have one set of leaves and are starting to grow a second set.  Do I put them in the green house or will that be too warm? I was wondering whether I could take a chance with them and grow them outside at home in some large pots?  I wouldn't want to risk them at the allotment yet but I could fleece/cover them if it looks like we were going to get a frost if they were at home.  It seems a shame to ditch them.  Any advice much appreciated.

Growing early beans is easy, its getting them planted without a risk of frost is the game. And it all down to judgement. I have sown some now to get the early crop. The main crop will be sown on the allotment next month.
In your case: I would not pinch them out. Put a small cane to give them support and don't let them get tangled up. Keep them in pots so that you can put them out in the daytime and bring them in at night. Frost free nights are at least two weeks away. Worth it when it all comes together.

Just keep an eye on night-time temperatures. I use Weather forecast. com. Tonight the night temp is 8 deg. Tomorrow it is 1 deg. My new potatoes are coming through so they will need the same protection as your runners.
