Is there time for onion sets...?
« on: April 22, 2013, 11:18 »
Hi,

As the title says, do I have time still to get onion sets in?

I was going to grow them from seed, but they are looking piddly!  (and the cat sat on the tray of red onions squashing them somewhat  ::))

Saw some sets for sale in B&Q at the weekend, (now reduced), but is there still time to plant and get a decent crop (doubt I would get them in until this weekend due to time constraints).  Might seem like a simple question but I've not grown them before.

Thanks

Hannah

I hope so, I put mine in ages ago and they have just sat in the dry soil and done nothing.
I have started to water them to get them going. You might get some that are sprouting already if they have them reduced.

Well so much for getting some at lunchtime, someone has parked my car in front of mine so I can't get out and I can't find said person to move it...  :mad:

Perhaps afterwork?   ::)

I haven't planted my sets yet and I got them in February  ::)  But not without trying - 2 weekends on the trot ever since winter decided to give way to spring, I've been trying to get my potatoes in the ground.  Every time I go to the plot, I take the bag of sets but there's always something else more important to do first.  Next weekend ......

And me, it's been so cold, wet and windy lately that my shallots are still sitting there waiting for me to plant them!  They WILL go in this week!  :)

Mine are only just going in. After the freezing temps and a bad back just as it began to warm up, I am behind. Only just putting in potatoes and 1 row of onions done today.

I put in my first and second earlies last Friday, and this Friday coming I'm hoping to put in the maincrop as well as a few rows of onion sets (reds and whites). As stated - hope it's not too late!
I may be Welsh, but I love ewe anyway!

Don't give up on your onion seedlings - well, those that have not been squashed by the cat anyway!  Mine are still like blades of grass, but they'll come good in their own time - same happened last ŷear, and they eventually just took off.  I'll be planting them out in the next couple of weeks.  The sets will be fine planted soon too.
