Potting on
« on: April 21, 2013, 18:55 »
Hi guys,

I have some tomato plants that are in root trainers and are doing well, they are about four inches tall.  When would i transplant these into another pot?

thanks
Dear God, Please can you stop the wind and rain and bring on the nice weather. Amen

Never used them myself, but at 4" tall my plants would normally be in 5" pots by now, the more space for roots to grow, the bigger the plant, the bigger the yield will be :)

Probably about now.

My general rule is to pot on just before the growth of the plant slows down because it has become root bound or has run out of nutrients. But every time a plant is potted on/ transplanted there is a risk that it will stop growing for a bit if the roots are disturbed.

So I try for the minimum number of pottings on, with minimum of root disturbance.

Good news is that toms are almost indestructible, so it doesn't matter so much.

My method, which is different to many of the experts,  is to prick out the tom seedlings when they are about a week old into 3" pots.  Then straight into their 8" ring culture pots as soon as the weather is warm enough, regardless of size, number of leaves or flowers. Yes, it is "wrong", but the "right" way doesn't work for me. ::)

Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.
