Exchequer Leghorn/Ancona
« on: April 19, 2013, 09:05 »
I am increasing my flock and have been looking at various breeds.  I already have an Ancona  but have seen one called an Exchequer Leghorn which looks exactly the same  Is it???

Do you mean an exchequer Leghorn? Black with white spots?  I had a couple, lovely birds but the cockerel didn't like me much.  The hens lay white eggs.

I love the Leghorn breed, they are full of character and very funny to watch. The big bonus with them is that they lay a good sized egg and are fantastic foragers, always busy. I have 3 of them and would have more if I ever get some extra land.  :D

Yes I meant the Leghorn (changed it now )  Anyway  it looks identical to my Ancona  who is a lovely looking bird and lays beautiful white shelled eggs.  I wondered what the difference was , if any?

Not sure of the histories of the 2 breeds, but maybe originated from different countries?  Same bird, different name?

Anconas come from Italy, and apparently the exchequer leghorn originated in Scotland!

I have just googled and looked at both pictures, it seems they are very similar.  The Anconas looked to be mainly black with flecks of white, the Exchequer leghorn looks more like a chequer board.

Leghorns come from Livorno (English pronunciation Leghorn) on the west coast of Italy and Anconas come from the east coast of Italy almost opposite each other

The imported Leghorns were white ones which are basically black and white ones but concealed by a dominant white gene.

A chequered one popped out in Scotland some time ago and was selected out and bred on to give us the Exchequer Leghorn we know today  :)
I love my traditional clean legged English Cuckoo Marans
