Heeling In?
« on: April 17, 2013, 18:16 »
Evening all,

A gentleman at my allotment site said that, as we have loamy crumbly soil, I need to heel the soil in.

Is this just tampering the soil down to get good seed contact?

Or is there another reason for this, as I have always been told never to compact the soil?!.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

You usually heel the soil in to make contact with roots of established plants. To do it with seed it a bit OTT!

I use the back of my rake.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Not that I remember, I think he said something about the plants could blow over in the wind and get torn out too.

Do I need to worry about this, or can I carry on?

And can I just firm the plants in by hand when transplanting things?

And surely anything sown direct will just look after itself?

My soil is quite loamy and I always put my size nines onto newly planted brassicas, as I said I only tamp down seeds.
