Did anyone see Nesbitt in Ireland last night?  The show grower they spoke to grows his snips in the big blue barrels in his polytunnel.

Lovely parsnips, they must have been over 2 foot long, and very pretty, but much of it was so thin, I think I'll stick to my chunkier ones!  lol

I can see why DD needs a digger now Grannie!  Any bigger and he could hollow them out and sell them as canoes!

I wasn't sure whether it was a way to go for parsnips, so they went into paper pots again.

They've just started their seed leaves, so I'll have to get them in by the end of the day...

Last year I sowed 4 x 4m rows with one seed every 6 inches or so.
After they germinated, I had around 70% of them sprout.
I used the remaining seeds from the packet and germinated them on damp tissue, then directly planted these when they germinated.
Result was 100% rows with no gaps. Worked well for me.

I sow direct, but don't chit and I can double you!

4lb 5oz (just over 2 kilos in new money)

Sorry to those of you who seen this a few times, but Aidy was asking for it!
Yea but mine was one of those thinning snips, dont camera lens with a wide enough field of vision for the later ones  ;)

I'm trying chitting parsnip seed this year too, some in the ground already and another batch in the kitchen roll...

Will join in the experiment and sow some direct without chitting and see what happens!

Chitting on paper produces so many seedlings that when I finished putting them in toilet rolls I just plonked the wet paper on some compost in a large pot and they are growing away well, I aim to use them as small carrot size for an early crop

I popped 16 pre-sprouted parsnips in this evening but I'm not really happy, as they had already reached the bottom of the paper pot which is over three inches long! The seed leaves were tiny, and one of the crew might even be a weed!

I think I'll sow some more direct as insurance.

Hey, so what, Mrs G doesn't really like parsnips, except in soups, when we fight like senior cats...!

I'm trying the pre chitting on kitchen paper method. I've had real problems getting anything to germinate on our cold, heavy clay soil .I will sow one row direct and see which do best!

I'm chitting some now, hopefully to go in direct at the weekend. I did some a couple of weeks ago and put them in loo rolls but I think I've left them too long. I'll stick them in the garden somewhere when I clear a spot. They'll be a sod to peel, but they'll still be parsnips :D

Mine were 3 weeks

last year I sowed direct and got.....3  :nowink:
the year before I sowed direct and got about 12 (but it was a better year of weather))
the year before that I did Richy's paper pots and got a stonking crop - but I wanted this year to try the damp kitchen towel prechitting

I am now really nervous about breaking off the shoots when I go to plant - eek!
