Size of netting
« on: April 12, 2013, 15:15 »
I am going to buy some debris netting for my carrots and parsnips and will probably use it to cover over my brassicas etc as well rather than buying separate mesh. I am just trying to woken out what width will be most cost effective. My beds are 1m wide and very long so would 2m wide netting be sufficient? How high do I need to make my plastic piping hoops? If I need to I will buy 3m wide it is just much dearer and I don't want to buy it if I don't need to.

Just attached this for a post about Rhubarb. If you look in the background you will see some hoops for a brassica bed. Hoops are 2.5 m long and I use 3 m wide debris netting. The white fly get through but not the butterflys. Not sure about carrot fly though - I would have thought you would need enviromesh for that.

Thanks, from what I have read on here there are plenty of people using debris netting for carrot fly so I think it should be good enough - but I am willing to be corrected. Debris netting is so much cheaper though so I hope it is ok!

In terms of the width I am still undecided - I suppose that by only using 2m wide netting my hoops can only be a maximum of around 40cm high - is this high enough or do people have them higher?

You need a bit more  - I use old bricks / old tent pegs to fastening the netting on the sides and ends -

Think it would be best to go for the 3m netting as you need enough to be able to peg down and it needs to be secure al round otherwise the dreaded butterfly will get in ..Not sure about it being ok for carrot fly think the mesh will be too large i stand to be corrected ...
Grow organic as nature intended

Used it for a few years and never had carrot fly - but - I have a windy plot and I use thick twine to seal up the larger holes.

No problems with light, you would not see so many people using it if it was a problem.

Debris netting does the trick for me. I would recommend the 3m width as you may grow taller brassicas such as brussels and purple sprouting. It lasts forever so a good investment.

Ok, 3m it shall be thanks! Considering debris netting is half the price for more than double the amount of enviro easy I am willing to give it a go this year.
