hatching
« on: April 11, 2013, 10:14 »
I have 6 pekin bantam eggs under a broody.  On the night of day 19 three eggs hatched and there are 3 lovely healthy looking chicks. Today is day 22. The other three eggs are still intact. All candled looking hopeful I thought on day 10. My question is, how long should I leave the other eggs? Are they unlikely to hatch now so long after others? Mo is still sitting on them although did go briefly for food.

if mum is still sitting on them then leave them alone - she may be able to still feel movement inside the eggs.

Don't forget to post the lovely chick pics when Mum brings they out on show.   :D  Fingers crossed for your remaining eggs to hatch.   :)

This morning I discovered Mo sitting away from the original nest and the 3 eggs were cold. I checked them, no signs of hatching or sound and very cold. I opened them, one had signs of early development but two were fully formed and dead  :(  No evidence of any attempt to hatch. Wonder why?? Poor little things.
I haven't seen the other three yet today but hoping they are safe and warm tucked up in Mo's silkie fluff.

They can look fully developed but there may have been a defect in them.  Better for them not to hatch than die as young chicks and you wonder if you did something wrong.

It might just be that Mo could not cover them all enough to incubate them all, it has been awful weather for this time of the year.
