I was hoping to lay some cardboard down 1st or builders bags as a barrier and  replace the chips every 3 years or so?

No need to replace the chips as they decompose into lovely soil. You just need to top up the chips every year.

Ever considered dpm then if you can afford it plain builders gravel. Once rain has hammered it a few times it looks tidy
