Broad beans
« on: April 10, 2013, 13:50 »
I sowed some broad beans directly in the ground about 3 weeks ago and have yet to see any sign of germination.
As it's been pretty cold since, should I give up and start again or is there still a chance of something happening?

You could plant more in pots then you are covered if the first planted have 'passed on'!

Cheers,   Tony.

If they haven't been (bean :) ) eaten by mice they'll probably be up soon enough.

Lol, very good Crh  :D. All mine were eaten by mice after I had germinated them in pots, planted out when they were 4 inches high. PAH, couldn't believe the little b****** had eaten them after that.

Last year, in that tropical spring we had:-
Sown direct unchitted on 19th Feb at 10deg C
First sign of germination 18th March

This year, sown on 14th March.  Still holding my breath,  and waiting and waiting... ::)
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

Mine have been in nearly a month and haven't shown yet. I hope I didn't put them in upside down!

My Autumn sowing only came up a couple of weeks ago.  ;)  Put some more in last weekend. Things are just weird with the weather etc.  Don't despair yet.

it is the cold. (or mice too). Soil is still cold. When little weeds start appearing, your beans should too.

Sowed my first 2 rows roughly the same time. Checked at the weekend, happily rooted but biding their time on the leaves.

I did all mine in pots in the GH last autumn. I planted some out in November, but they got whacked quite bad by the lovely weather. I replaced them with the ones still in the GH when the weather looked to be picking up. Then the weather got colder and it whacked them too. Being a tight sod, I'd saved the first lot which I dug up, potted them back up, and put them in the GH just in case. The ones in the GH are now looking much healthier than the ones I replaced them with outside. Nice big plants, about a foot high, full of flowers. I've even hand polinated with a soft brush because of lack of insects. Looks like all change again.

They will sort themselves out - no such thing as upside down for a seed.
No worries - they will come up.. just been so cold so germination is taking longer.  I planted some in modules in the house on 2 march and then out into the GH when i ran out of space. They are only starting to show now.. so about 5-6 weeks..
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..
