carrots and root fly
« on: April 10, 2013, 10:06 »
Remember that gloriously sunny week we had in mid February?  Well in a burst of optimism that spring had arrived early I sowed some carrots.  I also sowed onions (spring ones I think) in the same container and covered them in fleece and positioned them in the car port.  A few onions started to germinate so I took the fleece off.  When I got back from being away for a few days there were loads more but a quick google search showed they are probably carrots not onions!

So, do I put the fleece back on to protect from root fly, or are root fly unlikely to find them if they are not in a garden?

They just have the seed leaves at the moment

Thanks

If there are carrot flies about (and there could well be now it's a bit warmer) it's odds-on they will find your carrots.

Some seedlings look quite similar especially before they get their first true leaves, but carrots and onions look completely different - onions emerge looped up and then straighten into very slender tubular single shoots - carrots, um, don't!  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Try to plant them off the ground.

Carrot root fly cant fly higher than about 24 inches I believe.

And Jay is correct, Carrots have leaves that are like ferns and Onions, dont really even have any leaves, just a long pointy thing.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

As they are already pleanted wizzy, its a bit late to say try to plant off the ground  ;)

And yes, apparently carrot fly can't fly higher than 24 inches, but they can get blown higher by the wind.  So if it was me, I would go on the premise that the flies haven't found your carrots yet flynn, and cover them, because if not covered or protected, the flies probably will find them.  Fingers crossed they will be okay!  :)

It's a complete myth that root fly don't go higher than about 24 inches!

I've had carrots in containers on a bench where the fly would have to be well over 4 feet above the ground and still suffered bad attacks. The only way to protect against the fly is fleece or enviromesh. And don't bother with the supposed fly-resistant varieties. They might not be attacked as badly but they'll still be attacked.

They might only be able to fly 24" high under their own steam, but they are good gliders and a little breeze can lift them a lot higher!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

...The only way to protect against the fly is fleece or enviromesh....

How well does fleece work compared to enviromesh?  I've got an abundance of fleece but very little enviromesh so would be up for trying the fleece if its effective.
