White chits on spuds
« on: April 03, 2013, 20:24 »
I've just got my spuds out of the dark cool cupboard to find they have all sprouted white chits, not the dark green/purple alien type chits.

Are they still viable, and will it effect the crop?
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

What would happen if the white chits were planted then?would they just not produce anything?

Ideally you have stumpy, strong, dark coloured chits this is the first main growing point of the plant. Although they will grow if you take care not to damage them, I think they will get off to a weaker, slower start. Better off planting out without chitting, than planting out with long spindly white chits. Could just rub them off and put them somewhere light.

The first year we got our allotment we left our seed potatoes in the dark. We planted them with the white chits on and they did just fine.

Having now learnt a lesson we now chit our seed potatoes in the light to get the dark chits. Although this is the correct way to chit them I cannot say we get any better crops or yield than we did with the white chits to be honest. Obviously other factors affect crop quality and yield however so I cannot be totally sure and maybe we just got lucky.

Personally I would plant them as they are and let them take their luck.

I don't think it matters that much, it's just that the white spindly ones are more fragile when you plant them.
Still, if they get broken they will grow some more - just the same as if you rub them off.

Just leave them in the light, somewhere cool, until you get round to planting them.
