Starting radish and spring onion seeds in pots?
« on: April 03, 2013, 12:33 »
Is it OK to sow radish and spring onions in seed trays before potting out?

I usually sow them direct but just wondered with this awful cold weather if there were other ways of getting ahead of the game for when the spring finally arrives. I don't have a greenhouse or cold frame but unheated utility room with lots of light.

Thanks

Both are very hardy so you don't need any heat at all but yes you can start them off in seed trays or grow them to maturity in boxes with holes in the bottom, putting them outdoors once they're established, or plant them out. I'm not sure I'd bother transplanting radishes though

I don't know about radish as they are quite quick growing, but last year I started off spring onions in trays (I used the trays you buy strawberries in in the supermarket about 6/8 seeds per tray), potted it out as a whole.  No idea if it's a the right way to do things but it worked and they grew.  Meant I had the chance to get them started whilst I created space in the veg patch (or just squished a few into little spaces I had).

I've used poly lined blue mushroom boxes, like these

for radish, spring onions and salad leaves  :)

I grow my first spring onions in modules, about 6-8 seed per module.

They then get planted out as a bunch. Later sowings are made direct.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The 20 to a half seed tray size.

These are the ones, they're very rigid and don't actually need seed trays to to put them in. Now on year 5, worth paying a little more than the flimsy ones.

I sowed a few radishes around the edge of my patio pots last year to get some earlier, its warm and sheltered by the house also if the radishes run to seed before bulbing up try eating the seed pods i think they are delicious.
