Richy Pots...
« on: April 01, 2013, 20:31 »
Is it possible to pretty much start anything off in Richy pots and is it advisable to do so with plants that dislike root disturbance. Carrots, beetroot, parsnips etc...

I have just down my parsnips after reading good threads above the pots. See piccy

When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

The only thing I would really say about the richy pots for parsnips is that you'd need to plant them out before the root touches the bottom.  Or you could get forked roots.

I never sow my parsnips in pots now, only insitu.  Even if they are a bit late, like  they were last year.  I still had loads of lovely parsnips.  Which was nice, as I have had a couple of bad years parsnip wise.

Do you need to open the bottom before planting out or will the parsnip get through ok without forking?

as long as the paper is moist the root will grow straight through. Tear off any pot that is above ground, when planting, otherwise it works like a wick and makes the pot dry out.
