not quite yet, the shoots need to get longer before they will root

It is recomended to leave all the growth on hydrangea's until the spring. It protects the young shoot's from late frost's.

Cuttings or new plants?

I was amazed by the price: I bought 4 new plants from Tescccco for £4 each (reduced of course). Good size sturdy plants... in full flower.  ::) Not quite the way I would have preferred but we are keeping them cool & frost-free in the hope of planting them out later.

Then, while enjoying my one day off so far this year, I saw some beauties for £2 each in a nearby town's green-grocers!!

You should see the monsters we have in our back garden! I dug one out last year to put 2 new veg beds in, I am not kidding you every spring I cut them right back, just twig really 6--12 inches from the ground, then the growing begins and they never stop, the one I dug out in it full glory would be 6 foot high and 10 foot wide!.

I hate them with a passion, still have another 4 to deal with this year. They are hardy as anything though, I have given them some terrible abuse over the years and they always come back every year bigger and bigger, would not recommend trying to dig out a big established one, crikey you will reach Australia before you get to the bottom of the roots. Be careful with these, sure they look nice but they soon grow completely out of control and turn into a right pain!

you hate them, but the OP likes them - or he wouldn't want to take cuttings  :nowink:

It depends on soil and location ( and also variety) as to how big they grow  ;)
