Hello,

Can I request some advice from the more experienced members please?  Is it better to plant raspberry canes in a raised bed or directly in the soil at ground level?

If your ground is not waterlogged i can see no need to put rasps in a raised bed. You need to trench around rasps occasionally  to stop them taking over the plot so bear this in mind when planting.

Even in my heavy clay soil I've planted raspberries directly in soil rather than the raised beds. As long as they've got support, they'll grow anywhere, and prolifically.

Mine aren't in a raised bed, like the others there doesn't seem to be any need for it, but mine have a wooden border around (it was like that when I took over the plot) and it does mean I can keep track of the little blighters sneaking into the next-door beds!

i wasn't aware that raspberries have a habit of spreading, do they do this rapidly? i planted mine yesterday straight into the ground below a support frame, but didnt trench around them.

Yes - like weeds ! I spent yesterday pulling suckers out of 3 other beds  and I know I'll be doing it all summer too.  If you haven't already I strongly suggest putting in some type of physical barrier to stop them wandering around, I really wish I had.

The trench is just digging around the edge of the raspberry bed to cut and remove the spreading roots. If you leave the roots to roam they will appear through paving and lawns and other places they are not really wanted.
They are not difficult to deal with so no need to panic.
