« on: March 30, 2013, 11:41 »
im thinking of putting my spuds in on wednesday thats if it remains dry. i always put mine 5-6 inches deep as a frost can go down to 3 inches i believe or is it still to cold for them to go in

Soil temp needs to be above 6C for them to grow - how warm is yours that far down?

I put mine in yesterday, im not worried that it might be a problem, i dont take the temp of the soil as i think thats one step to far(its an allotment not a lab), my soil FELT warmer than the air temp so thats good enough for me.

They will be ok , they just won't put on any growth till it warm's up. Now if their is water lying that deep (like on my plot) don't even think about putting them in.

Ours went in mid-April last year (which was fairly late for us). This year, it looks as though it will be later as the snow is taking a long time to melt.

Soil nice and friable in the raised beds, so have gone for it (earlies and second earlies --maincrop to follow if I have the strength tomorrow  )

No need to measure the soil temperature here - snow still lying on many parts of my garden.

Mine won't be planted until about a week after the air temperatures pick up, unless we go straight from freeze to furnace!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

It was snowing here earlier, and grey and cold - now the sun is out and it's 6C..................

So I'll be waiting a bit longer  ;)

Putting mine in tomorrow, think air temp is colder than soil temp.
They wont start sprouting till soil warms up anyway. :)

Put mine in today. I put them in deep and the soil down there felt cold, but not that cold. 6C is just above what a fridge is usually at, and the soil felt warmer than that, even if the air didn't :D

The 16 day forecast for Manchester says the last night frost will be on the 7th April with temps rising after that and daytime into double figures. That's it, time to dust off the barbie and get the beer on ice.

If you look at the temp graphs lower down it gives you the min night temp as well as the highs.
