Chitting pink fir apple
« on: March 21, 2013, 21:07 »
Hi all,

Have been chitting these for around four weeks now, still not chitting. Have them in a cool shed which gets plenty of light. Will be planting under cover in a greenhouse border so was thinking about just planting them out.

Anyone had much experience with them?

mine have been chitting about the same time in a heated bedroom on the windowsill so may cool down when curtains closed. Chitts now about 5mm max . They have a lovely flavour and are late so I am not bothered if they wait another month ! Hope that helps :)

They are a late maincrop variety and so naturally are slower to get going

No need to worry  :)

Pink fir apple are late maincrop and always very slow to chit. Bring them into the warm for a week to break the dormancy and return them to the shed once you can see chits.

If you plant them in the greenhouse now they will be very slow to start. They may well catch up by the end of the season.

In my experience they are very slow to chit - in fact they got planted  last year with no chits showing  :D

Considering that their pots were ignored most of the time - they still were a fair crop ;)

I'll agree with the chitting bit, but would like to add a word of caution in that they're very susceptible to blight. A few years back they were my only variety that got it.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Not growing any spuds in the ground outside this year, mostly going in a large greenhouse bed. Gonna grow some kestrel and winston in tubs for showing but they can go inside if blight rears its ugly head.
