Egg Question
« on: March 19, 2013, 21:35 »
Hello all,

Not posted on here a while I got my new hens in August an they have been doing well considering the good old british weather! I have 2 Speckledy's 2 White Stars and 2 Sussex Stars! All the hens are laying however one of the Sussex Stars seemed to be laying a really light coloured egg with what I describe as small bumps on the shell? Like pimples as if its not formed right? I give the plenty of food water, and grit, but not sure how to cure the problem?..

Any advice would be great!

Cheers

I don't know if you can cure this. It would be considered to be a fault if you were showing the eggs but otherwise I don't think it is a problem. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

If they are young hens she might grow out of it as she matures.

When you say "I give the plenty of food water, and grit", what do you feed them?  Best to stick to a good quality layers pellets, water, grit and crushed oyster shell available for egg shell quality.

Thanks for the advice,

I give them a good quality layers pellet that they have had since I got them, and a tub full of grit as well as there being it i the ground also!

my thoughts were perhaps a lack of calcium for the egg as the other hen is laying lovely eggs? As I read oyster shell etc makes the shell form?

Cheers

Yes they need the oyster shell to help the formation of the egg shell.  If your grit does not have it in you need to provided it separately.   :)
