As Trillium said int the post immediately before yours. They could well rot, rather than sit there waiting for it to warm up.

Yes - I think while these cold snaps are still around, I may as well wait until April to sow rather than throw seed away to rot.

I'll walk the dog over (when it stops hailing) and drop a black dustbin lid over the upturned dalek where I plan to grow my carrots, to warm the soil up a bit and hope to sow in a week.

Then when I do sow, I'll drop a clear cloche over to keep the heat in.

I've sown some in my polytunnel about 3 weeks ago and all through nicely now. How long before the slugs find them I wonder?
Regarding the temperature of the soil for sowing seeds, I read a veg book once that if you sat on the soil on your bare backside, and it was warm enough for that, then it was warm enough to sow! Interesting to try out at the allotment!!
