My Charlottes are in, and King Edwards go in next weekend. I figure I might as well go for it, after all, I get volunteers coming up every year and they have overwintered in some pretty grim conditions over the last 4 years and it doesn't seem to stop them. It'll be 3 weeks before they poke through the soil, hopefully things will be warmer by them  :)
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

We'll be OK down here in the S.E., Mums!

Get a few old ed-sheets ready in case of the May/June frosts, but really, we'll be fine, just mark my words!

I put some in spud sacks in mid March outside, showing through nicely now :). I am really sheltered though. My olive tree isn't so happy  :( , hoping I don't lose it.

I checked my soil temp today, and at 3" below the surface it was +5 C.

I recently got myself a soil thermometer and when I took the temp the other day it was reading less than 1 degree c, 3" or so down. How come I have got such a different reading? Could it be a faulty thermometer? I have had plastic over the soil for a couple of days to warm it up, when I tested it again this morning, result was exactly the same.

In any case, I have been convinced by others' posts now, I'm going to put my spuds in over the weekend, now that the weather is finally warming, it won't be long before the soil is warm enough, the seed spuds won't have time to rot before they start growing. I hope.

First three (of nine) through in big pots in the greenhouse.

They went in 15th March...

Mrs G noticed that Marshalls were still offering spud bags and seed pots yesterday!

Stir the soil with a fork a bit to allow the air in and help it to warm up. I put my potatoes in last weekend. Two or three days before I did so I drew out furrows so that the sun could get at where the potatoes were going. Placed the potatoes on the warmed soil and drew warm soil over them. You have to do the best you can. The warm rain forecast at the end of the week should warm things up.

I was digging over the plot at the weekend and the soil seemed pretty good, so if the rain holds off, will try and get back up there later on to start planting spuds.

The greenhouse is full to overflowing with other veg sedlings and I want the room the seed spuds are taking up for spacing.  Will feel a bit more back on track for the season once the spuds and onions are in   :)
