I have earlies , second earlies and main crop. I have planted my earlies - Swift - in cold soil I know - with overnight frosts - I know - I have covered them in fleece -  but if they fail - i will have the rest to fall back on....I think it is worth the gamble?........Time will tell.

I'm going away at the weekend otherwise I would have planted mine - the weather looks to be good. If it continues I may look to plant mine on Monday evening, unless your advice is to hold off for now?

The weather looks to be improving so I'm aiming to get my onion sets in tomorrow, (Friday)., then start on the spuds on Saturday. I have 180 2nd early and mains to go in so I need to make a start.

I feel the same... it's beginning to get late.

One very short row of "rocket" earlies went in a few days ago in a sunny (when we get any) spot in the veg garden but the plot's still not ready.

If the weather was like this in March on St Patricks day we would not hesitate to plant potatoes, so why hold back now.

I opened up furrows yesterday so that the soil will warm. The potatoes will be planted in the next day or so.

Well here in West Sussex we have just had three days of 3C maxes, a freezing wind, snow flurries and air frosts which would be classed as cold in the middle of January, never mind early April, so I am reluctant to plant just yet. I'm going to do some soil preparation this weekend with a view to putting the potatoes in either one evening early next week or next weekend at the latest.

I've planted potatoes in the middle of May before now and got a crop, so it is not a big deal.

My first & 2nds went in last monday.
As the weather appears to be warming up now, will those  couple of days make much difference?
Anybody know?
Thanks

My 1st & 2nds went in on Monday too. By the time they poke their heads above the soil in mid April the weather should have returned to 'normal' We will still have to protect against Late frosts but we do every year anyway.
Given how cold the soil is currently it may take longer than the usual 3 weeks for the Haulms to show and also mean our harvest will be a few weeks later.

I put my hand in the soil today and it did not seem too cold or wet, though there were frozen lumps of soil on the surface. I put in a row of spuds as they were getting soft and the chits were too long. It was now or never, so I have little to lose by taking the risk. The sun was warm so I enjoyed getting the job done.

All of mine are going in tomorrow as the seeds potatoes are getting a wee bit soft and I have a lot of work commitments over the next 2 weeks. I'm sure they'll be fine  ???

Good thinking...... we've waited quite some time. Bung them in. A few inches down under warmish soil - they should be fine.

Well I'm it the bullet and put my earlies in today! Lady Crystal and Charlotte, covered them with a couple of little spare poly tunnels I had (I'm only doing 1 x 4m row of each), just to help them along a little... Maybe....
