help with raspberries
« on: March 03, 2013, 15:04 »
hi i am abit of a confused matter over my raspberries. I ordered 2 sets from suttons seeds, a summer batch and an autumn batch but as i went ill last year and someone else planting them in for me, I dont know what is what. each plant had 1 cane which has now produced suckers, i did not cut the suckers back as they were not big but now i dont know which is my summer and which is my autumn ones.
currently i have ones that have leaves on the them which i am guessing are my summer suckers, do i leave these alone and not cut them?
also a different one which is a long cane with small buds on which i am guessing is my autumn one, do i cut this back?
i never got round to cutting my autumns as they were still fruiting in late december and i was away all of january and part of february.

any advice would be great as i am one confused person about raspberries

I hope I can help you sort these out, one step at a time

1. Any tall green canes with leaves opening now will be summer varieties. You can tie coloured wool or string round them so you remember which they are.

2. Anything brown and dead can be cut out, whichever it is, summer or autumn.

3. Autumn ones will start to grow canes any time now, so you can spot these and maybe label them with a stick on the ground. They will fruit from late August to November, depending on the variety. When they are finished fruiting, cut them right down.

4. The summer ones will start to grow new canes for the following year around May.

5. Once you have cut down the autumn ones before Christmas, you can dig them all up and sort them out where you want them, separately

6.Give them a good feed of fish blood and bone or growmore, and a mulch of anything you have to hand ---compost, old leaves for example, in the next couple of weeks

Hope that is useful for you
