Living willow dome
« on: March 02, 2013, 18:30 »
Hi everyone  :)

I'm looking to make a living willow dome for my little girls to play in, in the garden
It won't be massive but I would like it next to a fence.. Can anyone tell me if this is likely to be a problem? Google isn't forthcoming..
Many thanks

The fence probably isn't too much of an issue.

However, how close to houses would it be?

And will you be pruning it down to ground level annually?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi yorkie, was hoping around 15ft away from the house, could go as far as 30ft but would then be 10ft from neighbours decking if that's an issue? Re; pruning, the idea is to plant the whips to make the structure & then prune the dome so it becomes a permanent structure.

Does this help?

These are often made in schools and as long as they are welll pruned onto the original structure manage very well for years.

Hi sunshineband, this is exactly the kind of thing I'm looking at doing, however I know willow trees need to be planted a fair distance from houses etc, I'm trying to find out if the same applies to the domes but can't seem to find an answer

I think that the sort of willow used for domes, tunnels etc is not the same as the weeping willows we all recognise

You could contact this company and ask them about distance from buildings. thye will know for sure  ;) :D

Don't plant them anywhere near a water or drain pipe. The roots seek out water sources. A work colleague had to pay out a lot to rectify damage to a drain that was blocked by the rootball of his willow hedge.

Hi everyone thanks for the replies, well I called up & asked  :), apparently if you allow 1 1/2 times the height of the dome from houses that should be fine.  Can also be placed near fences. Queried water pipes & while she agreed that root system does seek out water sources, if the pipes were sound it shouldn't be a problem.  Either way I'll be planting my dome as far from my house & pipes as possible  :D
