All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

I believe you use them this time of year to put young plants and seedling in (that are also cold hardy like brassicas) to protect them from frost. I been thinking about putting my spuds in mine to chit as they dont mind it cold but would be ruined by frost. and that would also stop my mother grumbling about her windowsills.

Don't do it - potatoes are ruined by cold and temps can get down to freezing in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse.

They like cool and light, so windowsills are good - even if Mother disagrees  :D

I was thinking of putting leeks and brassicas in not spuds. It was just the timescale how soon do you put them in a coldframe

I've got cabbage in the cold greenhouse, so they should be fine, and I'll put my leeks out there as soon as they germinate  :)
