onion sets - all at once or in stages ?
« on: February 27, 2013, 11:04 »
hi all, very much a newbie to the lottie scene and after a bit of advice from more experienced heads.
ive got some onion sets to put down, both red and white, and was wondering if its best to get them all down at once or stagger them .

All at once.

They all need the same length of time to get to mature bulbs for storage. If you hold back, you'll end up planting weak sets that have tried to grow with no nutrients.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Please don't ram 'em into the ground as this makes it easier for the blackbirds to pull them out again and compresses the soil beneath the root plate.  Better to dig a small hole.

Cheers,   Tony.

Thinking of putting mine in next week
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

Trim any excess wispy bits off, plant as Tony says, then draw  bit of soil over the set so as to just cover it. As the set roots, the rain will wash the soil flat again.

Oh I love growing onions, they are my fave veg on the plot.  Yes defo plant all at once as has already been said.  Birds may pull them up so find something to protect them until they are a couple of inches high.  I use some of that cheap green netting and keep it in place with some odd twigs, if you keep it taught with the twigs it will sit high enough off the ground to deter birds.  I always wish I'd planted more each year

If you plant them as I suggested, you won't need netting!
