Depends.

I've sown & grown a minimal amount for a heated greenhouse.

The "depends" is where are yours going to go?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'll be starting mine in another week or two. They'll remain inside until it's warm enough to go into the portable greenhouse for a bit to harden off. That'll be in about 6 weeks time.

OK. Time line for Leicestershire.

Mine for a heated greenhouse have been sown for a few weeks now and are about 1" high indoors with loads of aluminium foil.

In about 2 weeks time I will think about sowing those to go into an unheated greenhouse. BUT remember, if the weather turns cold I have the option of keeping them in pots in the heated greenhouse.

Late March I'll start off those destined for the great outdoors. BUT remember I have the fall back of two greenhouses. (They're not huge, but I can cram things in, if needs must).

I hope you can see from this, this it's hard to answer a carte blache question as to whether it's too early to sow. There's a lot of other factors to consider.

I did. first time ever so early! I left hem on wet tissue, then moved into compost in pots, but will leave them on a cold a window sill when they pop out, so they can grow as slow as they can.

I'm so pleased to hear there's a go slow when it comes to sowing tomato seeds. I always imagine I'm going to be left miles behind when it comes to planting them into the greenhouse but......

It's such a pain when you start off too early and then end up with leggy, straggling monsters.

I’m waiting…. and waiting a bit longer still to sow mine for my unheated greenhouses.

When I do sow they will go into a thermostatically controlled heated proppagator-thingy until they germinate then sit in a warm conservatory to grow on.  Lucky devils...sounds like a holiday.

My indoor toms are up along with the sweet and chillie peppers after being raised in a heated propagator. They're now unheated on the south facing kitchen window sill. I'll pot them up in a couple of weeks. The ali foil will hopefully give them enough light.

I sow indoors during 1st week March, with the aim of moving them to the unheated greenhouse in April.  I try to wait for a min 10 deg C day/night temp before they go out.

Of course we didn't manage to even achieve that temperatures last year !
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

What do you need heated greenhouse in Torquay for?   A refrigerated one perhaps to get the temp down to 9 deg C  :tongue2:

This is my usual pattern:

Tell myself not to be hasty and wait a bit longer this time
Panic and sow them late Feb
Hog all the sunniest windowsills
Faff about for weeks on end turning them towards the light every other day
Prick out more than needed, pot on and bring back indoors
Faff about half heartedly hardening off depending on weather
Finally plant out way too many in unheated greenhouse, give remainder away
(Note to self to wait a bit longer next year)
Start off well, obsessively pinching out and winding the string as they grow
Loose the plot completely by August because I planted too many again

I used to do all of the above.

These days, I just wait for my local garden centre to get them in at 80p each. Then I buy far more than I really need.

That cuts out all the faffing about and gives me good plants.
Thanks

Andy
