« on: February 19, 2013, 12:28 »

Does anyone no of any butter head varieties of lettuce that have the best flavor to them? I have a nice salad recipe and would like some descent lettuce to put in it.

Thanks

Any particular reason why it has to be a butterhead?

Not really its just something we have stuck with but if you can suggest others for us to experiment with we will be more than happy to try :)

Little Gem always come up trumps and takes salad dressing very well too. It is like a mini crinkly cos

Seconded.

Whatever other varieties I try, LG is a "must grow".
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Agree with Sunny - Little Gem is a great little lettuce which actually has some flavour and texture, is slower to bolt than some, and lasts quite well in the fridge.

I sow it fairly thickly in a row, then thin out in stages - it doesn't seem to mind being transplanted even when a bit larger than you would usually transplant, so I finish up with a succession of maturing lettuces from one sowing.

Oh - agree with DD too!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I do them like this:

A small pinch in a pot.

Once big enough to handle, transplant into seed tray, (I do 15 in a large tray). At the same time sow another pinch of seed.

Grow the first lot on until they have at least 2 pairs of true leaves, then plant out. Then transplant your second lot of seed into the now empty seed tray and sow a third pinch.

Keep repeating the process and without having to think about it, you're assured of a succession of lettuce rather than a glut and a packet lasts years!

I also agree with Little Gem, and also grow Bronze Arrow for a colour contrast, picked as odd leaves or a complete head  :)

OH's dad in N Ireland grew Suzan (available from Kings) ...and now I am. It's a true butterhead rather than a cos like LG, very loose and floppy but with good flavour. Have got a fish box of it growing in the greenhouse from an autumn sowing (using DD's method above - looking forward to the first one in next few weeks

Always have LG growing as well

My absolute favourite is Australian Yellow Lettuce from Realseeds....grows very big but 10/10 for flavour and good for keeping the dressing on :)

I like the butterheads best and I've tried lots of different ones. For me, the one i always grow is All year Round, all other varieties i might try are also rans. The seed is cheap, and its a lovely big hearted lettuce.  My tortoises love them too and when the weather is hot the four of them can easily eat a whole one each in a morning as well as other stuff and then want it again in the afternoon. So i grow a lot of lettuce

I like to cut the heart out of one when i'm working in the veg garden and eat it like an apple.
I also like the softer leaves of butterheads over the cos types, they fit better into sandwiches i think.

Would like to ask while here, do you generally wash your lettuce.
