Celeriac & celery
« on: February 18, 2013, 20:32 »
I'm not much good at either of these, so any advice would be appreciated.  Got some 50p seed sale packs and an unheated greenhouse, plus limited window ledge space inside in mainly centrally heated rooms.

The books I have all stress early sowing is best, but am I better leaving it a bit

I tried Feb sowings last year, started them inside, then they went to the greenhouse.  It was such a cold spring, they sat there sulking for ages.  I'm thinking that a March sowing might be better, but does that make that much difference to the crop

Thanks for any help :)

I sowed mid February last year, in a heated propagator and they came up like mustard and cress.

I put too many seeds in too close together (been told germination was erratic)  so thinning them to one per module was very tricky, but I persevered.

The modules I used were too small at 1ins square, and with the dodgy weather they were in the modules too long, and got root bound.

Despite that we got some celeriac that were about 3 ins across: celery was not as good as the year before though..... not enough organic matter in the soil in that bed.

So.... I shall be sowing again soon, but more thinly, and pricking out into larger modules, planting into richer soil, and watering well if needed

Sounds good when I write it. What could go wrong????

I had trouble with germination a couple of years ago but realised that the packet instructions were wrong.

Last year I planted 2 packets and they all came up.
THis year I have 1 packet planted and covered the seed with a light sprinkling of vermiculite.
So far so good they are up and off.
I will prick them out when they are much bigger and put them in individual paper pots.
I will keep them in the house until it is much warmer.

Thank you both :)

Will sow a few soon then and transplant into decent sized modules so they can live in them happily for a while.  I think getting root bound was probably a factor with mine last year as they went out very late as well.  Here's hoping for a better spring this year  :)

I found that they liked their compost a bit wetter than most other seeds - which I water sparingly ;)
