Banana skins as a potassium feed?
« on: February 10, 2013, 12:21 »

They're supposed to be full of potassium, so I'm considerering shreding them and placing them in the pots with the tomato plants as a slow release feed.

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

I've heard of it done before to promote flowering, but there are different schools of thought on how effective it is. I'll stick to composting them. :)

It would depend how quickly the nutrients were released into the compost, whether they would be available to the tomato plants.....perhaps composting first is the best idea, as arugula says  ;)

I put mine direct in the soil like you would a bean trench and cover up.  By the time the plants are ready to plant out in June, they have usually composted down.  But for growing in pots I would probably agree that they'd be better off being put in the compost bin first.

We primarily bury them under/beside rose plants to increase plant vigour and blooming. Haven't really checked into veg aid.

Don't forget to save some for ripening time!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have done this for a few years, have to say that the tomatoe crops have been heavier over the past couple of years, i just sling them in a pot outside and when i pot up for the last time i put whats left of them in the bottom of the pots, thought this was my little secret but its out now :) i still feed when they flower mind you, but going on the years before i used them it works for me.

I think I'm gonna give this idea a go for tomatoes in my polytunnel.
I will separate the banana skins from my other compostable stuff. compost it, and see what happens!

Don't bother Gurgling "banana skin NPK" to try to find out how much potassium there actually is in banana skins - you will finish up none the wiser, will probably have a headache, although possibly also an enhanced knowledge about growing illegal "weeds"!  ::)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
