What size and shape of container depends on what you want to grow really.

I've grown carrots in 10 inch pots, potatoes in large bags and dustbins, herbs, carrots and salads in fish boxes, herbs in an old sink, tomatoes in hanging baskets.... ::)

Have a look at these articles:

I grew load of tomatoes on my patio last year in the pots morrisons sell 99p for 5 or 6 you can find them next to their flowers. Highly reccomend them as there so cheap you do have to put some holes in the bottom. Think they would be fine for trying peppers and aubergines, too small for spuds. A lot of places now sell the fold away pots made from tarpaulin at reasonable prices but I've never managed to get the drainage right in these and they fall apart if you try to move them

I've grown potatoes and tomatoes in old compost bags.  I turn them inside out so that all you see is the black plastic rather than the labelling, stick a few little holes in the bottom to allow for drainage.

And just roll over the tops to help them stand up until you've got the compost in.

Salad leaves and summer radishes are excellent grown in window boxes, as are beetroot  :D

You can grow spuds in morrisons flower buckets but I only use them for earlies where you want nice little potatoes anyway. My best yield from a flower bucket was about 3lb from one seed. There's probably no veg that can't be grown in a container but, like others say, you need to tailor the tub to suit the crop. One of my successes last year was runner beans grown up a bamboo wigwam in large round containers.

You can grow pretty much anything in anything!

I love seeing quirky things like flowers in old boots and old metal watering cans - they look really good decorated.

My plot neighbour John made a plot number sign out of an old watering can he painted up. He put flowers in it that year - I might give him a 'Gartenperle' tumbling tomato plant to put in it this year. :D

I'd not be trying brassicas in pots (cabbages, sprouts, calabrese). If you have a sheltered area you can do dwarf runner beans in pots - as well as dwarf beans - if you eat beans that is. No point in growing things if you don't eat them.
