greenhouse question
« on: December 02, 2007, 21:26 »
We have a shed to take to the allotment but we don't want to use it as such, so we were wondering would we be able to strip it down and use the framework as a greenhouse, and would it be alright to cover with polythene instead of glass, don't want to use glass as most of the greenhouses on the site have had the windows smashed, plus we have already got 4 black dustbins full of glass found on the allotment. :?

Don't see why not just get the stabilised pvc for polytunnels that will last longer and not go brittle so quick.

you'd probably have a job to fully convert

you could do half a job - maybe change the roof - to plastic sheets or dg panels

and maybe use dg panels along the front or one of the walls to make a half n half thing

seems alot of faffing to change a shed to gh - can you go for a temp - poly tunnel solution - maybe

or look in your local freecycle group - and get a greenhouse from there

Staple-gun some foam rubber (or similar) on to any points where the cover might rub, or it won't last 5 minutes.

Don't forget some windows an' all!

I'd be tempted to use polycarbonate sheet since you'll have a wooden frame to screw it onto.

thanks for all the advice, we have posted a wanted add on freecycle twice but not had any replies, had a look at perspex sheeting on a couple of web sites but found it really expensive, may advertise in the local paper if anyone has got a greenhouse to sell.

I bought a plastic greenhouse off ebay for a very decent price.  I will have to make sure it's properly secured so it doesn't get blown away but otherwise it should be fine for toms and chilli.  It might be worth having a look to see what's available.
