Recommend a pea
« on: February 03, 2013, 15:47 »
Hi all.
I'm looking for people's recommendations for different variety's of peas to grow this season. Me and the wife only eat peas raw. We pod them and eat them as snacks. Can anyone come up with suitable variety's for us?

Many thanks

Do you prefer small growing pea plants, or building wigwams for 5ft and 6ft tall plants?
I go for the tall-growing Champion of England myself.
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

I'll say nowt, 'cos you'll end up with a list as long as your arm without any input from me.

Everyone will have their own particular favourite and at the end of the day, it's your tastebuds, not theirs.  It's obviously something you already so, so try a few of a lot of different ones.

Did I mention Kelvedon Wonder?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It's one I grow!
Lovely - if you don't mind rigging up a frame for the 6ft netting it needs ;)

Hurst Greenshaft and Kelvedon Wonder are always favourites on our site with many growers.

I'm branching out and trying a few different varieties including those very tall and vary small to grow in different areas.

I have clubroot now so I'm growing less brassicas and far more peas.

I grew Lincoln last year, they tasted nice to me raw (I don't eat them cooked).  They are a shorter variety so easier to support.  I have some Aldemann to grow this year so preparing myself for a highter support network!

Good luck with what ever you decide to grow!

I've nothing to contribute about "proper" pea varieties, but both mangetout and sugarsnaps are delicious raw if picked before they become stringy.

For several years I've been growing sugarsnaps (an un-named variety from Wilco) which are great for my limited space as they crop for weeks on end, although the price to pay for that is a height of around 7 feet!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I don't bother until after the stalks are chopped off at the roots in June - it's such a small strip along the row that I can live with it til then  :D

You can do more harm than good weeding peas.

I hoe between rows, those in the rows get on with it until they're big enough to be chopped off individually. There's no bind to it!

thanks for the advice guys.
Ill give the green shaft a try this season.
I grew Sugar Ann last year but with not much sucsess. I put that down to the poor weather conditions last year. Think ill try them again though as the few i did get were lovely, trouble is around 70% were quite bitter?
